Analytical technology from Dräger!

The analytical technology division of Dräger Safety AG & Co. KGaA has responded to the growing interest of the general public as well as specialists and experts in the field of indoor pollutants and has expanded its range of services accordingly.
Among other things, the Dräger Bio-Check F is available for the orienting measurement of formaldehyde.
Dräger-Bio-Check F is an enzyme-based badge measuring system that is used without any other accessories and has been tested by TÜV, Stiftung Warentest and Ökotest, among others:
"Dräger-Bio-Check F is suitable for orienting formaldehyde measurement - especially for laymen" (test 6/95).

Some furniture lasts for years!

Furniture made of pressed chipboard, parquet floors, insulating foams, wallpapers and paints can release formaldehyde in harmful concentrations over many years. And because this exposure can be so long-lasting, it often does not occur to people that this pollutant can be responsible for daily complaints. Depending on the physical condition, formaldehyde can lead to eye and mucous membrane irritation, headaches or general mood disorders.

Why should formaldehyde be measured?

Formaldehyde is a gaseous substance that has a pungent odour at room temperature, irritates the eyes and respiratory tract and can cause allergic reactions. Formaldehyde is used, for example, in the manufacture of plastics and adhesives and as a disinfectant, steriliser and preservative. Due to its wide range of uses, formaldehyde can also enter living rooms and offices.
Possible sources can be, for example:
- Furniture
- Wall panelling & wainscoting
- Chipboard, plywood
- Disinfectants
- cosmetics
- Tobacco smoke

Formaldehyde can also be released from clothing. In indoor areas, a formaldehyde concentration of 0.1 ppm (parts per million = mililitres per cubic metre) should not be exceeded. The indoor guideline value can be used to assess the air in living rooms and offices, but not for assessing the air in furniture, e.g. in cupboards. For this reason, a measurement location should be chosen that corresponds to the most frequent place of residence in the respective room (inhalation level).
A formaldehyde measurement is recommended if health problems such as burning eyes or irritation of the mucous membranes occur, or if there is a suspicion that formaldehyde is being released from one of the above-mentioned sources, for example.

Operating conditions!

- Temperature: 15 ° C to 25 ° C
- Humidity: 10 % to 90 % relative humidity
- Measurement: DO NOT carry out in direct UV radiation (e.g. sun, halogen lamps) and do NOT carry out near heating sources (above 25 ° C).
- DO NOT touch the white indicator, do NOT get it dirty or wet
- If smoking has occurred or is occurring at the measurement site, an elevated formaldehyde concentration is to be expected.

Evaluate measurement!

The evaluation must be done directly after the 2-hour measurement:
--> Push the colour code through the slot, compare the colour intensity of the indicator with the intensity levels on the colour code. Determine the colour value of the same intensity.
To facilitate correct assignment of the colour levels, evaluation in bright daylight is recommended.
Any red discolouration that occurs after the measurement period of 2 hours has been exceeded is of no significance. Later discolouration can also occur without the influence of formaldehyde.
!! If the discolouration lies between 2 colour values, the lower colour value is to be used for evaluation.
